One of the best parts about Halloween is the movies of the season! From Tim Burton creations to LAIKA Studios, there are many wonderful movie sources of the season to choose from. I have compiled yet another of my little lists of my personal favorite movies to watch during Spooky Season. If you have not seen them yet, I highly recommend giving them a watch! I will also be providing my own little content ratings on these movies, since some are not suitable for younger children. But every single one of them is a must-watch!
5. Corpse Bride
Tim Burton’s most visually stunning movie, in this writer’s humble opinion. Shown through gorgeous stop motion, the movie tells the tale of Victor, who accidentally finds himself wed to a dead woman named Emily. His corpse bride wants him to stay with her in the land of the dead, but he finds himself longing for the land of the living and his original fiance, Victoria. Corpse Bride is a beautifully animated story of death, vengeance, and tragedy. At the same time, it is a tale of love, happiness, and the importance of getting closure. Recommended for kids of all ages, as long as they're not easily frightened.
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas
A Halloween classic! As fun, spooky, and hilarious as the original poem, Henry Selick directed a fantastic story about a skeleton named Jack, trying desperately to find the meaning of Christmas with very chaotic results! Filled with a memorable cast of characters such as Sally, the Trick-or-Treaters, and of course the Oogey Boogey Man, this is a movie my family revisits over and over again! Like the previous movies, this is great for for kids young and old as long as they are not acutely sensitive to Tim Burton’s creepy style.
3. Clue
Six guest are invited to a dinner party at the manor of Mr. Boddy. When their host is murdered, they know only one of them can be the killer… but who? Full of twists, turns, and a high dose of laughs, Clue is a great way to introduce some side- busting laughter to this season of frights. For teens and young adults.
2. The Sixth Sense
A truly haunting tale about a little boy who can see ghosts, and the doctor who tries to help him heal. Equal parts scary, devastating, and uplifting, this movie is beautifully directed and very well casted, telling an unforgettable story of loss, acceptance, and letting go. This is a brilliant movie, but keep this one for your teens and young adults. It is not for the faint of heart.
1. Coraline
This is my personal favorite Halloween movie of all time — and one of my favorite movies, period. Coraline tells the story of a little girl with a strange name, coping with moving to a new town and the distance it causes with her parents. In trying to find herself a better place, Coraline finds herself in the clutches of an ancient and cunning evil. Now she must use all her courage, wits, and determination to save her family. Coraline is one of those few movies I can't help but call perfect. Its stop motion is phenomenal, the characters are amazing, and the horror is top notch. If your younger kids are hardy enough, this is the movie for them. Otherwise, keep it for your older kids, teens, young adults, and beyond! Coraline is a true gem, and it is a cult classic that is always welcoming in new fans! Just don't accept the buttons. It won't go well for you.
This spooky season, turn out the lights, light the jack-o’-lanterns, and bond with your kids over movies about tricks, treats, and things that go bump in the night! Happy Halloween, moms! May your Octobers always be full of creepy crawly cheer!
