Days Worth Celebrating: August

Dog Days of Summer are almost over, but that doesn't mean your summer adventures have to come to an end just yet! While August is Back to School Month, it is also Family Fun Month. So, let's squeeze in some last bit of merrymaking before hitting the books again. This August is full of wonder! There are 2 Super Moons and a meteor shower, not to mention the first week of August is International Clown Week, which is cool… if clowns don't give you the heebie-jeebies.

1st Homemade Pie Day - We've all heard the saying 'as American as Apple Pie," but did you know that pies date all the way back to the ancient Egyptians? Early "pies" were almost exclusively filled with meat, and the crust was actually a way of preserving the meat and not always intended to be eaten. But here we are with a variety of sweet to savory pies to tickle your taste buds. Celebrate the day with a homemade pie, or if you don't have the time, you can cheat and buy a premade crust... I won't tell. Also! Don't forget to look up at the sky tonight, as it will be the first of August's two Super Moons!

3rd National Watermelon Day - Nothing says summer like watermelon. It's built into the traditions for the warmest months, but I just discovered something new that I must share. Watermelon wrapped in Prosciutto! Evidently, Italians have been wrapping Prosciutto around melon (Prosciutto e Melon) for decades, and I am drooling just thinking about trying it. Like I said, I just stumbled across the concept, so I can't vouch for it, but come on, that sounds worth a try!

6th National Sisters Day - Is it any wonder that Sisters Day falls on National Friendship Day? Siblings are some of the best friends you will ever have. So, give your sisters a hug today… or hug your brothers and then thank them for celebrating National Sisters Day.

8th Sneak Some Zucchini Into Your Neighbor's Porch Day – Yes, you read that right. And I AM IN! Why would you do this? (I guess it has something to do with an overproducing garden, but really) I don't know. BUT imagine waking up and finding a Zucchini on your porch! Confusion Ensues!! Why does this amuse me so much?

11th -13th Perseids Meteor Shower is peaking this weekend. The shower will be active in the sky from July 14- August 24, but around the 13th, expect as many as 100 meteors per hour! It should be an excellent time to catch a shooting star (okay, shooting meteoroid) as the moon will only be 10% illuminated.

24th National Waffle Day – Yummmmm. I'm not sure if I really like waffles or if I reeeeally like syrup, but either way, I shall be indulging! I recently got one of those mini waffle makers (because why not), so I may make this day a little adventurous and try one of these fun recipes.

27th World Rock Paper Scissors Day – I've got an idea! What if today you make all your decisions with a game of Rock Paper Scissors?? You could take a family adventure with A/B choices along the way, all decided with a round of Roshambo. What will you do? Where will you go?

30th Blue Moon - Tonight is the biggest Super moon of the year. Head outside and check out the giant Sturgeon Moon in the sky. It is also National Toasted Marshmallow Day, and I think that lines up perfectly for some S'mores!

Need more excitement in your life? Please check out last year's August Days of Note for more ideas on days worth celebrating.
