I am not a doctor, so of course this content is for informational or educational purposes only, and does not substitute professional medical advice or consultations with healthcare professionals. I have come to love herbs and homeopathic remedies in light of the positive experiences I have had utilizing them, even when not in emergent situations.
I don’t consider myself an expert, but even with what little knowledge I have collected over the years, it has been a blessing to myself, family and friends..
I have often found myself in situations where I couldn’t find or get to a doctor, afford a doctor, or when doctors haven’t been able to diagnose, treat or help me and my loved ones. Even if you have never found yourself in a similar situation, chances are that you will someday. The likelihood of finding yourself in such a situation increases exponentially with each child you add to your family and the older your family gets.
My intent here is to share some of my favorites and inspire you to learn more about herbs and homeopathy on your own. One great resource is a weekly newsletter from Dr. Christopher. My sister completed the Master Herbalist course offered by Dr. Christopher years ago, and much of what I have learned has been from her sharing her knowledge.
So, let’s get to the fun part!
My favorite herbs I have on hand and why:
Garlic: Anti bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal. Use with cayenne and honey to cure strep throat. If I couldn’t get antibiotics, I know I have this.
Cayenne Pepper: stops hemorrhaging and bleeding of any kind. Evens out blood pressure. Use with garlic and honey for strep throat. Carrier herb for other herbs. Use in emergency in case of heart attacks and strokes. Will not cause chemical burn, can be used in the eye and heals the gut.
Slippery Elm Bark: Stops stomach nausea, throwing up, diarrhea. Heals the gut and entire digestive system. Makes a tasty gruel and provides many nutrients in the case of limited food supplies.
Peppermint Leaves: excellent for fevers and viruses in conjunction with Red Raspberry Leaf. Helps with headaches and an upset stomach.
Red Raspberry Leaf: wonderful for pregnancy, post-partum, viruses, fevers, and teenage hormone/acne issues. Very pleasant taste.
Catnip: Excellent for illnesses and for enema to clean lower bowel including appendicitis.
Raw Honey: important that it's raw. Great for allergies, to mix in with any infusion (some call herbal tea) and as a medium for ingesting herbs.
My favorite homeopathic remedies I have on hand and why:
Arnica Montana 30c- general pain relief, help for bruising.
Bryonia 30c for pain where you don't want to move and prefer to be in a dark, quiet room.
Hypericum 30c— for nerve endings, cuts on fingers or extremities that are painful.
Hepar calc sulf 30c— painful cuts starting to get infected.
Arsenicum 30c— gnawing stomach pain. Headache with chills and nausea.
Nux Vomica 30c— migraines with nausea.
Kali Bich 30c— sticky, stringy, yellow or green mucus (chest or nasal)
Hyland’s brand teething tablets— may no mother ever be without these lifesavers. Give them to your teething baby or toddler and say goodbye to the fussy irritableness.
I hope this inspires you to have some simple herbs and homeopathic remedies on hand! As I said in the beginning, I do not have medical training, but I have learned in the "University of Motherhood," and often there is no better palace of knowledge.
