You Know Me, Mom

By Alyson Suzanne King

It was the first day of my life and you were there.

I was bare and scared until you held me.

Your arms protected me from the fall

You helped me crawl before I walked.

Day after day, year after year, you hold me

Sometimes in your arms, always in your heart.

You helped me grow and let me know that I was strong

Though sometimes wrong, but never quitting.

When I was stuck and prone to cry

You made me try to go the extra mile and smile along the way.

Day after day, year after year you hold me

Sometimes in your arms, always in your heart.

The song I sing in my soul is your song

Begging me to sing along and sing loud and free

The dance I dance in my feet is your dance

Telling me to take a chance and be the me you taught me to be.

It was the first day of my life and you were there.

I was bare and scared until you held me.

It was the last day of your life and I was there.

I was scared and then you left me.

Day after day, year after year you held me

Never again in your arms, but always in your heart.

And always you will be. Living on in me.

I am the daughter you made.

You know me, mom.
